Bridging the digital divide: Ohio University Eastern empowers communities with 5G Readiness Certification
Starting Jan. 13, 2025, Ohio University Eastern will empower individuals to step into the future of telecommunications with its 5G Readiness Certification program.
This groundbreaking initiative, offered at no cost to participants, combines online learning and hands-on training to prepare community members for high-demand careers in the rapidly growing 5G industry.
Developed in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Higher Education and the Lt. Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation, the program underscores Ohio University’s dedication to bridging the digital divide and advancing workforce development in underserved areas.
"We are excited to offer the 5G Readiness Certification, a free program available to both Ohio University students and community members through the McClure School of Emerging Communication Technologies, in partnership with the Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA). This initiative reflects Ohio University’s commitment to equipping individuals with the essential skills needed to succeed in the rapidly growing telecommunications industry," said David Rohall, dean of campus and community relations at Ohio University Eastern.
The certification program addresses a critical challenge faced by many rural communities: limited broadband infrastructure and the economic and educational barriers it creates. By equipping local residents with skills in wireless infrastructure, 5G ecosystems, and fiber optics, Ohio University Eastern is empowering individuals to fill workforce shortages while creating pathways to economic mobility.
The program’s origins lie in Ohio University’s recognition of the challenges faced by rural and regional communities, where limited broadband infrastructure has hindered both economic growth and educational opportunities. By equipping local residents with the skills needed to support the rollout of 5G and broadband technologies, the University is addressing workforce shortages while empowering individuals to seize high-demand job opportunities.
The upcoming Spring 2025 cohort, hosted at Ohio University Eastern, reflects the University’s targeted efforts to serve regional populations. Starting Jan. 13, 2025, this cohort will explore essential topics such as wireless infrastructure, 5G ecosystems, and fiber optics, culminating in a certification that can serve as a gateway to employment in the telecommunications industry. The hands-on training will take place locally, further cementing the program’s accessibility for eastern Ohio residents.
Ohio University Eastern’s involvement ensures that this opportunity is tailored to the needs of the local community. The program is not just about technical training—it’s about fostering economic mobility, addressing regional challenges, and contributing to the state’s broadband expansion goals. Applications for the spring cohort opened on Dec. 3, 2024, giving residents a chance to join this transformative initiative.
This certification program is more than a career stepping stone; it’s a pathway to personal growth and community development, made possible through the innovative vision and leadership of Ohio University.
