OHIO’s Leadership Launchpad: A new era of student leadership development
Ohio University’s College of Business has launched an exciting new initiative, the Leadership Launchpad, aimed at equipping first and second year students with essential leadership skills.
Open to all students interested in leadership roles, the program has already seen an impressive enrollment of 90 students this fall, surpassing initial expectations. With plans for further expansion in the spring, the program is set to grow even more.
Amy Toth, director of learning and development at the Walter Center for Strategic Leadership, explained that the program is structured around three key steps. These steps enable students to earn a Leadership Launchpad digital LinkedIn credential and a challenge coin, marking their achievements.
The Walter Center for Strategic Leadership, in partnership with the Business Academic Advising and Career Services, has designed this program to fit seamlessly into students' busy schedules.
This initiative allows students to develop leadership skills, gain practical experience, and grow both personally and professionally without a significant time commitment. Students also gain exposure to other leadership development opportunities offered by the Walter Center, including two certificate programs, two selective student programs, the SHRM Student Organization, and the recently added GCP Netherlands.
Katie Thomson, associate director of career management and career education, described the Leadership Launchpad as a powerful and enjoyable way to nurture leadership skills in first-year students, potentially leading to further involvement in leadership activities.
Program highlights
- Leadership workshops: Students must complete two workshops that cover essential leadership skills and help them identify their individual leadership styles. These workshops will be available throughout the fall and spring semesters.
- Signature event attendance: Students are required to attend one Walter Center signature event, providing hands-on leadership experience through various platforms and events, such as the Lancaster Executive Leadership Speaker Series, the LEADLive Series, the Eco-Challenge, and the Leader Games Challenge.
- Reflection submission: To complete the program, students must write and submit a reflection on their experiences and growth. Upon submission, they will earn an online credential showcasing their developed leadership skills.
Looking ahead, the program plans to introduce two additional workshops for the Fall 2025 semester, further enhancing its offerings.
