Senior Spotlight - Katie Dettwiller
A resident of Otway, Ohio, Katie Dettwiller is graduating this semester from the Patton College of Education with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. She completed her professional internship at Portsmouth Elementary School.
Why did you choose Ohio University Chillicothe?
I chose OHIO Chillicothe because of the location, the services for transfer students, and the prestige of Ohio University.
What was your ah-ha moment at Ohio University—that point where you said to yourself, “I’ve got this!”?
My ah-ha moment was when I was placed in one of my first clinical placements and I was working with students in the classroom. I realized that teaching was exactly what I was meant to do and the great impact that teachers have on their students.
How has your OHIO education prepared you for a career in education?
Ohio University has prepared me through many clinical placements in all types of school districts, and grade levels. This allowed me to have many diverse experiences that taught me a lot about being a teacher.
What was your most memorable class?
My most memorable class was ECEE 4400 Teaching with Literature.
Who were your favorite professors and how did they make an impact on your life?
All the professors I have had during my time at OHIO Chillicothe have been wonderful. I have learned something from each one of them and they have had a great influence on the teacher I am now and hope to be in the future.
What was the hardest hill you had to climb at OHIO? And how did you overcome challenges or obstacles in your path?
The hardest hill I had to climb was managing a full course load while coaching volleyball. I am grateful to the professors that worked with me and helped me to complete my degree and coach at the same time.
What are your favorite OHIO Chillicothe memories?
Some of my favorite memories were meeting new classmates and being in class with them. I’ve met some good friends through OHIO Chillicothe, and we have worked together over the years while learning to be the best teachers we can be.
What are you future plans after graduation?
My plan is to substitute until I can find a teaching position in a local school.
