Serendipity: Mid-Career Community of Practice 

Serendipity: Mid-Career Community of Practice (SCP) is a year-long, cohort-based community of practice (September – April) designed to support mid-career faculty by providing opportunities to explore challenges commonly faced after promotion and to consider potential career opportunities post-promotion.

Structure

The purpose of the SCP is to build a community of practice that offers the tools and connections to explore (a) pathways in which faculty members can assert themselves to find opportunities to more intentionally and strategically invest in mid-career within challenging contexts and (b) scaffolding and supports needed to help mid-career faculty members assume personal agency throughout this stage of the faculty career. 

The SCP workshops and discussions will be held virtually and will provide faculty with opportunities to discuss mid-career challenges/rewards, explore opportunities for post-promotion pathways, reflect on individual strengths, identify areas for improvement, and articulate individual development plans.

In order to complete the program, participants are required to attend most of the workshops (at least five of six workshops/discussions) and are expected to review material prior to each workshop/discussion. At the end of the program, participants will be invited to articulate their ideas and goals using an individual development plan.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the SCP program, faculty should have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to:
o    Describe common mid-career challenges and rewards.
o    Consider opportunities and obstacles for alternative post-promotion pathways.
o    Evaluate individual strengths and areas for development using self-assessment.
o    Articulate an individual development plan.

Eligibility 

All full-time mid-career OHIO faculty who has been promoted to the associate-level are welcome to join the community of practice. Because some of the discussions and learning outcomes include a focus on research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA) productivity, mid-career faculty with RSCA responsibilities are strongly encouraged to participate.

2024-25 Serendipity: Mid-Career Community of Practice (SCP)

The 2024-25 SCP will be co-led by Janet Simon (Associate Dean, College of Health Sciences & Professions) and Katie Hartman (Vice Provost for Faculty Development). 

SCP meetings will be held virtually through MS Teams on the second Wednesday (September – April) of each month from 2:00-2:55PM time. Additional optional in-person and virtual meetings may also be available.

Faculty interested in joining the 2024-25 cohort of the SCP are invited to register for the program at this link no later than August 30, 2024. A maximum of 15 faculty will be accepted into the program.
