The VisCom Focus

The VisCom Focus gallery exhibits work from current School of Visual Communication (VisCom) undergraduate and graduate students, program alumni and special guests, such as prominent visual communication industry leaders.

VisCom students produce a variety of work across all majors: Photojournalism, Commercial Photography, Multimedia and Information Graphics/Publication Design.

The gallery opened in 2015 and was named “The VisCom Focus” in 2023 by a generous gift from the Mulgrew Family Endowment.

Why Focus?

“We like the idea of 'focus' because it has many meanings ... not just 'focus' in the technical VisCom photography sense, but many of the shows which VisCom hangs in the Gallery focus on social issues like poverty, focus on the world brought to Athens, focus on the success of our student award winners, focus on the professional success of our graduates.”

-The Mulgrew Family (‘71, ‘72, ‘04’ and ‘08)

Experiential Learning

By participating in the VisCom Focus gallery, students gain invaluable hands-on experience in curating and showcasing visual communication, providing a unique opportunity to engage with the work of their peers, alumni, and industry leaders. This involvement not only enhances their understanding of the art and business of visual communication but also fosters professional growth and networking opportunities within the field.

Student Work

VisCom students have unique experiential learning opportunities in the VisCom Focus Gallery. By creating, installing, and exhibiting their own artwork in a campus gallery, students gain hands-on experience, receive professional feedback and have the opportunity to connect with a larger audience.

These are some of the images and projects created by VisCom students.

Join the Gallery Committee

Students can participate by joining The VisCom Focus Gallery Committee. Every semester all VisCom students are sent an email asking if they want to join faculty and participate and learn how to curate and hang exhibits and decide on future exhibits. If they choose, students may get two credit hours for being a gallery committee member.
