Meet the Fellows

Sophomore
Maddox Bock

Major: Honors Tutorial College - Art History

Hi, I am Maddox Bock, I am studying art history through the Honors Tutorial College and minoring in Classical Civilization, and this is my first year in the Ohio Fellows Program.

Sophomore
Sophia Dawson

Major: English Lit, Culture, and Writing

I joined the OHIO Fellows program as an opportunity to connect with individuals across disciplines that I wouldn’t get to meet otherwise.

Sophomore
Brooklyn Greenspan

Major: Accounting

I joined the Ohio Fellows program for the opportunity to connect with driven students who I wouldn’t get the chance to meet outside of my classes. As I go through this program, I look forward to learning to connect with people who have different interests and experiences than myself.

Sophomore
Rylee McClintock

Major: Political Science

I wanted a unique way to interact and build connections for my professional career. The OHIO Fellows help me interact with different organizations and businesses that I would not be able to reach on my own.

Junior
Kaitlin Campbell

Major: Marine, Freshwater and Environmental Biology

I joined the OHIO Fellows Program because it is an opportunity to network with students with different interests and skills that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to interact with otherwise. It has also given me the chance to develop professional skills that will help me in my future career aspirations.

Junior
Sarah Deering

Major: Health Services Administration

Graduation Year: 2026

I joined the Fellows Program to find more in-depth ways to interact with my community. The program has allowed me to understand my peers, build collaborative skills, and better my connections for future career paths/opportunities.

New York Highlight: The highlight of my New York trip in 2023 was visiting the New York Stock Exchange. Learning more about the history of the stock exchange introduced me to the idea of advertising, marketing, and the business lifestyle. With this experience I added a business minor and found my niche within the business industry. Not only do I have a minor that I am passionate about, but I also have exposure to the business side of New York.

Junior
Christopher Hare

Major: Virtual Reality and Game Development

I joined the Fellows spring of 2023 with the hopes of collaborating with professionals in other fields of work to foster an understanding of other perspectives and philosophies in the professional field. I hope to utilize these connections and perspectives when crafting stories of my own, using them in games, comics, and books alike, using these story elements to help inspire others to seek understanding. Additionally, I was hoping to gain more experience in professional settings with like-minded individuals, which has been a wonderful part of the fellows program.

Junior
Avery Kumes

Major: Honors Tutorial College - History

I joined Fellows because my honors program is designed to be very specific and tailored to my interests and post-graduation plans. I've greatly benefitted from this approach, but I wanted a more interdisciplinary experience and felt I was missing out on the opportunity to interact with people who had different interests. Fellows has definitely fulfilled this for me and I'm grateful to have already met so many interesting and passionate people!

Junior
Sara Weller

Major: Wildlife and Conservation Biology

The Fellows contained a small group of students dedicated to broadening their horizons and making the most of their formative years. These qualities have only proved true, and I am eager to see what my next years of the fellows holds.

Why have you joined the Ohio Fellows Program?

The Ohio Fellows immediately stuck out to me as an incredible organization that valued intellectual discussions beyond “what’s your major?” An organization full of individuals true to themselves and passionate about their respective disciplines.

What is a highlight from either your Tetons or New York experience?

During our Tetons trip, following a day full of environmental education, presenting, and a meeting with a Fellow Alumni, our cohort stayed up until 2 a.m. to watch a meteor shower That memory is forever worth the next day’s of tiredness.

Senior
Ryann Davis

Major: Political Science

I joined Fellows in the spring of 2022 because I was looking for a career-oriented, professional development, and community building organization. I am a first-generation college student, and I wanted to ensure I got as many opportunities for career networking and skill-building as I could. Here, I have found some of my closest friends, solidified my career path, and learned so much about other fields.

Senior
Kora Garee

Major: Aviation Flight

Why have you joined the OHIO Fellows program?

I joined the OHIO Fellows program to make new connections with people I wouldn’t ordinarily interact with. I’ve especially enjoyed being able to see how other people’s personal experiences have shaped them into who they are.

Why have you joined the OHIO Fellows program?

I joined the OHIO Fellows program in the Spring of 2023 and was drawn to the group with the hopes of meeting fellow members with a variety of passions and backgrounds. And have done just that! I’ve had an incredible time expanding my personal and professional network.

What is a highlight from either your Tetons or New York experience?

Traveling with members has been such a great bonding experience and has helped build an incredible sense of community within the Fellows. While on our Tetons trip, our group took a float tour down Snake River, and experiencing the breathtaking views of the Grand Tetons from all angles was one of the most unforgettable moments I’ve ever experienced.

Senior
Ryan Humeniuk

Major: Economics

Why have you joined the OHIO Fellows program?

I mostly wanted an opportunity to meet others outside my degree programs and broaden my experience, but the trips are certainly a nice perk!

What is a highlight from either your Tetons or New York experience?

I had a lot of fun in the Tetons seeing so many cool animals and getting closer to my peers in the Fellows! Being able to have such an in-depth experience with the park was also such a unique experience that I’m so thankful I got to be a part of.

Senior
Andrew Lewis

Major: Outdoor Recreation and Education/Recreation Management

I joined the Ohio Fellows in hopes to connect myself with a broad community of scholars with a variety of disciplines. I wanted to be a part of the Ohio Fellows as an opportunity to travel, network and understand the world from different perspectives the average classes were not providing me. Being an interdisciplinary program, I applied with the excitement to surround myself with individuals outside of my own major curriculum and with an open mind to explore what the Ohio Fellows could be to me. The Ohio Fellows is a place where you can express your own thoughts, experiences and perspectives alongside like minded, yet unique individuals. The Fellows has be a space where I can foster a personalized and meaningful experience towards my own journey.

Highlight: Each students gets the opportunity to visit the Grand Tetons National Park in Wyoming with the Ohio Fellows. For me this was a transformative experience that most of all heightened my passion for sustainability and outdoor education. On the Tetons trip we spent our week at Teton Science School with outdoor educators that we all ended up being very close with. The entirety of our day time was spent immersed in the beautiful natural beauty of Wyoming with the focus on better understanding its unique environment. The processes we talk about and the lenses we viewed them through were eye opening for myself and the others on the trip. I will leave the rest for you to discover as the point of the Fellows is to make your own path.

Senior
Riley Long

Major: Biological sciences

Why have you joined the OHIO Fellows program?

I joined for the opportunity to greater personalize my college experience and get involved in an interdisciplinary program to strengthen my personal and leadership skills.

What is a highlight from either your Tetons or New York experience?

Getting to go to the Tetons was one of the best experiences of my college career. My favorite memory was volunteering with the National Parks Service on a trail cleanup project, where we helped trim back limbs and brush to help make the trail safer and more accessible. Getting to do service work on one of the prettiest trails I’ve ever seen was such a rewarding experience.

Senior
Olivia Lutz

Major: Media Arts Production with double minor in Commercial Photography and Music and a Social Media Certificate

Why have you joined the OHIO Fellows Program?

I joined Fellows due to the amazing opportunities offered by fellow students, professors, and alumni, as well as the opportunity for collaborating and learning from others. The diversity of intellectual thought is fascinating and inspires me to learn and explore more, as well as be a more community-oriented individual.

What is a highlight from either your Tetons or New York experience?

The Tetons made me appreciate nature more and how the ecosystem corporates and the role of humans in nature and the different perspectives from different communities. I learned a lot about outdoor education and met some amazing educators.

Senior
Nick Mazurowski

I joined the Fellows to push me toward being the happiest, the most successful, and the best version of myself. I can attribute much of my success to the lifelong connections I’ve made through the Fellows, in which many of these were cultivated through experiential based learning opportunities. My highlight from visiting the Tetons Science School was being able to connect with my peers while watching meteor showers after a long day of hiking and learning. I also gained a great deal professionally by visiting with companies outside of my traditional career path when attending the New York trip.

Senior
Donovan O’Malley

Major: Environmental Studies

I joined the Ohio Fellows because I deeply value diverse perspectives. The issues of our campus, greater community, and the world cannot be solved without an intersectional approach and the Fellows was a perfect opportunity to make connections and broaden my experiences.

The highlight of my Fellows New York City trip was finding the confidence to initiate and execute networking conversations with alumni. Witnessing others in the program grow in the same way was equally rewarding. Our connections are invaluable.

Senior
Henry Pausch

Major: Media Arts Production

Senior
Brayden Schlenker

Major: Psychology (Forensic)

I joined the Ohio Fellows because I wanted to be part of a group who was focused on becoming a launchpad to develop my own self as a professional and give me the skills necessary to do so. I was seeking to become a member of a group of impassioned individuals who are focused on not only their studies but becoming professionals in their own respective fields; and that is what I found!

One of the highlights of my New York experience was getting to visit Terry Moore. Being engaged with someone of his stature talking about his own experience with the fellows and his own outlook on how someone becomes a professional was truly a moment that I will never forget.

Senior
EllieAna Shanklin

Major: Environmental Studies

Why have you joined the OHIO Fellows program?

I joined the Ohio Fellows program to meet highly motivated peers from different educational and life backgrounds, improve my professional development skills, connect with alumni, and engage in experiential learning opportunities. The Ohio Fellows is an engaging program that exists beyond just the classroom, and I knew it would enrich my time at Ohio University.

What is a highlight from either your Tetons or New York experience?

A highlight from my Tetons experience was witnessing a baby Osprey learn how to fly. It was a beautiful moment that made all of us stop our hike and appreciate the incredible wildlife of the Grand Tetons. Although not everyone entered the trip as a wildlife fanatic, I know each one of us left Wyoming with a greater appreciation for the natural world and its captivating wonders.

Senior
Michael Tan

Major: Computer Science

Why have you joined the OHIO Fellows program?

I have joined the Ohio Fellows because I wanted to explore beyond my horizons. For most computer scientists in my major, they want to focus and specialize on their tech elective. But for me, I desire to see everything I can see and create a well-rounded view of this world and the people around me. I believe by achieving this goal, I can understand and connect to more people as well as break personal stigmas and beliefs that may hinder those connections.

What is a highlight from either your Tetons or New York experience?

During the Tetons trip, my experience hiking through the woods and seeing a bright, clear lake amidst all this wilderness had awestrucked me, astonished by the natural beauty I had never truly seen until now. I never felt so connected to nature until that trip and that ignited a love for the Earth that raises and takes care of us.
