Middle Childhood Education

Middle school presents new challenges and opportunities for students, both academically, emotionally and physically, as students begin developing into young adolescents. The Middle Childhood Education (MCE) program at Ohio University Zanesville will prepare you to help young adolescents in grades 4-9 develop conceptual understanding and fluency in various content specializations, as well as the skills and competencies necessary for active and informed citizenship. The Middle Childhood Education program emphasizes a commitment to equity, justice, and diversity.

The Bachelor of Science in Education in Middle Childhood program includes six majors with academic specializations in any two of the following content specializations: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. A generalist endorsement for each of the four subject specializations is available for candidates who wish to add a third or fourth teaching field to the middle childhood license to teach grades 4 - 6. Upon completing the program and achieving passing scores on the Ohio Assessment for Educators exams and a Teacher Performance Assessment, you will be eligible for a four-year provisional teaching license for grades 4-9 in those areas.

    Potential Careers


    Middle Childhood Education (MCE) prepares students for licensure to teach grades 4 through 9 in elementary school upper primary grades, middle school, junior high school, or high schools (9th grade only).

    Learning Environment


    Students enrolled in the Middle Childhood Education program complete their clinical-field placements and professional internships in classrooms and programs for children in grades fourth through nine. Public and private area schools partner with OHIO Zanesville to mentor Middle Childhood Education students enrolled in methods of teaching in a variety of content areas.

    The Rural Urban Collaborative, a requirement for admission to Professional Internship, helps to prepare teacher candidates by fostering a deeper awareness of how to examine, understand and assess a variety of cultural experiences and issues based on gender, race, social class and geographic locality.

Program Admission Requirements

First-Year Students

All students pursuing teacher education programs at Ohio University are subject to the Selective Admission and Retention Program in teacher education. Criteria and procedures are available in the Student Services Office.

Candidates must be admitted to Teacher Candidacy before taking any education courses numbered 2000 and above (Exception: EDCT 2030).

Generally, candidates apply for admission to Teacher Candidacy during the second semester of their first year. 

Requirements:

  1. Completion of 30 semester credit hours with cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. 
  2. Completion of the following courses with a grade of C (2.0) or higher in each course:
        a.    Fulfillment of the Foundations: Quantitative Reasoning general education
               requirement with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.
        b.    Completion of the Pre-Teacher Candidacy coursework listed below.
  3. Submission of test scores on one of the following assessments. Admission will be determined holistically in tandem with other requirements and supplementary materials. Students only need to take and submit scores for one of the following tests, not all three.
        a.     PRAXIS CORE (Academic Skills for Educators) Test
        b.     ACT
        c.     SAT
  4. Submission of the results of a background check through BCI & FBI.
  5. New Transfer Students: Transfer cumulative GPA may be considered towards Teacher Candidacy.

Transfer and Current OHIO Students

lf you are enrolled in a different major or college at Ohio University and wish to transfer into this major, you must either declare the pre-major code, if you don’t meet the admission criteria, or apply for selective admissions if you do meet them. To be admitted to the major, you must apply and be accepted after the successful completion of the admission criteria.

The program will follow the protocol as outlined in the OHIO catalog for transferring credit from other colleges and universities and in accordance with the Ohio Department of Higher Education Articulation and Transfer Policy.
