Each year, the Career and Leadership Development Center (CLDC) engages more than 6,000 students for individual coaching and brings an average of 350 employers to visit the Athens campus to recruit students. During the 2018-19 academic year, 561 students earned a leadership certificate, 500 earned a CLDC certificate and 8,000 attended a CLDC workshop.
The Division of Student Affairs (DOSA) is in its third year of a micro-credentialing pilot project that seeks to help students become aware of, develop and articulate DOSA’s eight learning goals. The Ohio University Leadership Endorsement team piloted the program during spring 2019 with 1,200 DOSA student employees. Assessment data indicated that students’ awareness of the eight learning goals increased by participating in the program.
This year, 11,013 employers connected to OHIO through Handshake, posting 28,902 full-time jobs and 6,170 part-time jobs to the university-wide job and internship database system. This reflects a 497% increase in opportunities posted to students and alumni compared to 2017-18. Recruitment opportunities in 62 industries were available for students through career fairs, panels, networking events and online job postings.
The CLDC prioritized academic partnerships by leading a Faculty Learning Community centered on Facilitating Career Development. Ten participants were selected who represent a diverse range of faculty and advising roles across multiple academic units and campuses. Additionally, 20 course sections enrolling 433 students were taught by CLDC staff during the 2018-2019 academic year through four academic colleges.
Funded by the Career and Experiential Learning student fee, IRE, in partnership with the CLDC, has expanded and refined graduate data collection and reporting beginning in the fall of 2018. This resulted in increased validity and reliability of job placement data on our OHIO alumni throughout the country.
During the 2018-19 academic year, 386 OHIO students accessed the rapidly expanding Career Closet, a 622% increase from last year. The resource provides Ohio University students and alumni with professional attire for interviews, career fairs, formal events or any other career-related function.
Nine teams comprising 70 student participants competed in the Bobcat Leadership Challenge (BLC), a new leadership development experience where teams of students competed in skill-based challenges judged by employers. Students trained cumulatively for over 100 hours throughout the semester in preparation for the event, where judges from Hyatt Regency, Enterprise Holdings, Honda and Bridge Logistics assessed performance and offered industry feedback to students.
