Sanctioning Guidelines for Drug & Alcohol Offenses

Community Standards and Student Responsibility (CSSR) utilizes standard sanctioning guidelines for alcohol and marijuana related referrals. The guidelines listed below are used by hearing officers within CSSR and Housing and Residence Life (HRL). While the guidelines below are general practice, hearing officers may propose different sanctions based on specific information shared during the Community Standards Conference or based on what information is available in the referral.

Alcohol

The following sanctioning guidelines are for typical for a first time finding of a violation for the respective charge listed below. However, First offenses of this behavior may result in probation, suspension or expulsion due to the severity of the behavior and/or the presence of aggravating circumstances associated with the alcohol consumption. 

D03a - Alcoholic Beverage Violation - Use and/or Possession

  • 6-9 months disciplinary probation
  • Self guided educational intervention - Around the Block ($25 fee)
  • Minimum of 10 hours of community restitution
  • An educational reflective component

D03d - Alcoholic Beverages Violation - Misconduct

  • 9-12 months disciplinary probation
  • Workshop - Decisions ($50 fee)
  • Minimum of 15-20 hours of community restitution
  • An educational reflective component

Subsequent violations of this provision of the Student Code of Conduct may result in longer periods of probation, suspension and/or possible expulsion.

Marijuana and Other Drugs

The following sanctioning guidelines are for typical for a first time finding of a violation for the respective charge listed below.

D04a - Controlled Substance and/or Drug Violation - Use and/or Possession of Marijuana

  • 6-9 months disciplinary probation
  • Self guided educational intervention - Marijuana and Prescription Drug Education Initiative ($25 fee)
  • Minimum of 10 hours of community restitution
  • An educational reflective component

D04c - Controlled Substance and/or Drug Violation - Possession or Use of Drug Paraphernalia

  • 6-9 months disciplinary probation
  • Self guided educational intervention - Marijuana and Prescription Drug Education Initiative ($25 fee)
  • Minimum of 10 hours of community restitution
  • An educational reflective component

Subsequent violations of this provision of the Student Code of Conduct may result in longer periods of probation, suspension and/or possible expulsion.

D04e - Controlled Substance and/or Drug Violation - MFR, DIST, SALE, OFS of Controlled Substance

Conduct involving D04e (manufacture, distribution, sale of drugs or controlled substances) will likely result in a minimum of one-year suspension with a strong possibility of expulsion.  If a student is suspended, other appropriate educational interventions and activities will be required as well.

Conduct involving other D04 drug violations will likely result in:

  • 9-12 months dictionary suspension
  • Career probation upon return
  • Minimum of 15-20 hours of community restitution
  • An educational reflective component

Subsequent violations of this provision of the Student Code of Conduct may result in longer periods of suspension and/or possible expulsion.
