African Studies Undergraduate Certificate
The African Studies certificate — open to undergraduate students from any major — explores the African continent's emerging aspirations and trajectories in the 21st century.
- The program was founded in 1964 amidst the excitement emanating from the decolonization of the continent and the awareness of the important role Africa could play in world affairs.
- Today, the OHIO African Studies Program examines African futures through coursework and research on economic developments, technological innovations, sociopolitical transformations, cultural productions, and sustainability initiatives.
- The program focuses on themes of dynamism and resiliency in relation to African and African diasporic peoples.
The program includes courses from various colleges and disciplines, including multiple opportunities for study abroad.

Career Opportunities
The African Studies Undergraduate Certificate prepares students for careers in international development, diplomacy and foreign affairs, business and entrepreneurship, academic research, cultural and creative industries, environmental and sustainability consulting, social enterprise and non-profit management, technology and innovation, and media and journalism.
Requirements
Full Requirements and Courses in the Official Academic Catalog
The African Studies Certificate program requires a minimum of 26 hours and maintaining a 2.5 or higher GPA in certificate courses.
Courses and Languages
- Take the core course INST 1100 – Introduction to African Studies.
- Complete two years (four semesters) or equivalent in an African language. OHIO offers language courses in Akan, Arabic, Swahili, and Wolof.
- Take three elective courses such as African Art, Geography of Africa, Cultures of Africa, African Politics, and African Music, among others.
