OHIO's Renowned War and Peace Studies Program

The 21st century has witnessed a staggering scale of violence, war, terror and genocide on the one hand, yet heightened global interdependence and innovative approaches to intervention, peacebuilding and international justice on the other.

  • The wars in Palestine, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen; the conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia; the genocide of the Rohingya in Myanmar; widespread human rights violations of Uyghur populations in China; the brutal civil war in Sudan; and the persistent violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo underscore the centrality of war and peace studies in the contemporary era.
  • The expansion of the Department of Homeland Security; ongoing enhancements in intelligence analysis, risk assessments, border control, and immigration; and increased attention to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence reflect domestic and international attention to evolving security challenges of counterterrorism and counterinsurgency.
  • Students require academic and professional training on the theories and instruments that promote development, humanitarianism, reconstruction, de-escalation, and transitional justice.

Since 2010, the Center for International Studies has advanced an innovative vision of War and Peace Studies that combines cutting-edge interdisciplinary training with deep knowledge of key areas and cultures around the world.
