Health and Physical Education
Program Code: BS8194
The Health and Physical Education (HPE) major at Ohio University’s Patton College of Education prepares teacher candidates to pursue careers in the field of health and physical education. The program engages candidates in a more inclusive generation of pedagogy by promoting lifelong physical activity and healthy lifestyles for ALL.
The major feature is dual-teaching certification within the four-year program. Graduates earn teaching licensure in both Health and Physical Education for PreK-12th grade.
Teacher candidates practice and learn within authentic school settings and across multiple grade bands. Field experiences provide hands-on learning through observation, peer teaching, team teaching, and culminate with professional teaching internships.
Teachers seeking an endorsement to add physical education to their license should visit the Ohio Department of Education for options. The Patton College does not offer a way to earn a Physical Education and Health Endorsement for current teachers.
Admission
All students interested in physical education will enter Ohio University with a pre-major code of ND8926 (Pre-Health & Physical Education). To be admitted into the major, a student must apply to and be accepted after successful completion of nine courses, and maintain an accumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 or higher.
