Alaa El Choum is an Interior Architecture student at Ohio University, set to graduate in December. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, she is now based between Abu Dhabi, UAE, and Cleveland, Ohio, where she lives with her husband and three daughters. Throughout her studies, Alaa has consistently made the Dean’s List, reflecting her dedication to the program and her passion for design.

Alaa’s internship at Al Bayaty Architects has been significant in her growth within the design world, giving her valuable experience and a glimpse into international design. Inspired by her family’s background in engineering and architecture, Alaa’s interest in design grew as she began assisting friends and family with home renovations and event planning. Her thesis focuses on creating safe, supportive school environments—a project that reflects her commitment to functional and meaningful design and underscores her deep appreciation for education as a foundation for personal and community growth.

After graduation, Alaa plans to pursue her NCIDQ certification and is exploring career paths that include gaining further international experience or contributing to projects closer to home. She is also focused on expanding her business, LACE (Luxury Aesthetics & Creative Events), which combines her love for interior design and event planning. Outside of design, Alaa enjoys cooking and baking, which she views as creative expressions like designing a space.
