Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree: Applicants are expected to have a bachelor’s degree in music education from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or equivalent.
  • Official Transcripts of all academic work showing a 3.0 GPA must be submitted with the online application.
  • Academic Writing Sample: This sample should be 3-5 pages in length (not included cover page, abstract, or references and adhere to the latest edition of the APA manual. Choose one topic from the following:
    • What role does assessment play in the music classroom and how do you effectively/efficiently implement assessment strategies on a regular basis? Please reference current research literature to support your stance.
    • In your opinion, what do you foresee as a major contemporary issue that music educators will face in the near future? Please reference current research literature to support your stance.
    • Discuss the role of the music educator with regards to providing high quality music education experiences to students with disablities in your classroom. Please reference current research literature to support your stance.
    • Many teachers struggle to effectively manage the classroom. Please describe what you belive to be an effective classroom management strategy. Please reference current research literature to support your stance.
    • Examine the role the music curriculum plays in the development of a well-rounded student. Please reference current research literature to support your stance. 
  • Letter of Recommendation: Please provide a letter of recommendation from someone who has seen you teach (colleague, Principal, etc.) and can speak about your potential for success at the graduate level. Please send this directly to Dr. Talbert (talbertm@ohio.edu).
  • Teaching Sample: Applicants for the music education graduate degree must provide a ten minute video recording which demonstrates proficiency in teaching. Please send the video link directly to Dr. Talbert (talbertm@ohio.edu).

  • A $50 application fee is associated with the submission of your application for this program.
