Course Design
Course Design/Redesign and Development:
In the Office of Instructional Design, we offer three course design services: Collaborative Full Course Design, Customized Project Support, and Self-Directed Design Support. Each pathway allows faculty members the opportunity to collaborate with an instructional designer to create pedagogically sound and engaging courses and/or course components.

Our Instructional Design team works collaboratively with faculty to create quality learning experiences that support student success by integrating evidence-based pedagogical practices, emerging technologies, and innovation. Our team at OID works in strategic partnership with key departments such as CTLA, OIT, Experiential Learning, Libraries, OHIO Online and numerous others. This collaborative approach ensures that you receive comprehensive support throughout every phase of the course design process.
Developing a new course typically follows a 14-week timeline, guided by OID's four-phase course design approach.

Weeks 1-3 | Step 1: Planning Your Course | -Create learning outcomes (LOs) -Map course LOs with activities and assessments | -Create course template and structure in Canvas -Provide course alignment feedback -Provide recommendations for structuring LOs |
Weeks 4-12 | Step 2: Design & Development | -Provide content and resources -Review learning objects and provide feedback -Create course media and record voice narration -Create activities and assessments -Ensure academic rigor of the course -Provide recommendations for structuring LOs | -Create LOs and course structure in Canvas -Edit course design based on faculty feedback -Edit/finalize design of course media objects -Design assignments and assessments -Provide pedagogical advice for student success strategies |
Week 13 | Step 3: Reviewing For Quality | -Receive overall course quality report with feedback from ID’s | -Evaluate course accessibility, design, and student experience using OSCQR rubric and provide feedback to faculty |
Week 14 | Step 4: Final Approval & Launch | -Review the course with the ID -Make the course available to students | -Provide a course orientation walkthrough with faculty to ensure a smooth transition and student experience -Provide guidance on how to make the course available for students |
