Land & Sea: Visions of New England

This is the first painting exhibition ever held at the Kennedy focusing upon work from the late 19th and early 20th centuries (the post Civil War era through the Interwar years in America).

The landscapes on view are by some of America’s finest and most popular painters from this period, including Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, George Inness, John Marin, Willard Metcalf, Edward Potthast, John Singer Sargent, John Sloan, John Twachtman, J. Alden Weir and Andrew Wyeth. American Impressionist & early modernist painters are strongly represented. These paintings focus upon the beauty, mystery, and spirit of New England that American artists passionately examined when exploring the region’s seascapes and landscapes during this period.

The work of a few select French avant-garde artists including Eugene Boudin, Charles-Francois Daubigny and Auguste Renoir are included to provide context for the experimental styles and new subjects that innovative American artists examined while searching for a relevant contemporary voice through landscape. The exhibition would not be possible without the generosity of the Huntington Museum of Art (WV), who has loaned some of their finest and most popular works of art.
