Securing Devices at Home and Work

Research from digital services provider Capita suggests that employees believe it’s the organization’s job to secure remote work. The Office of Information Technology works hard to ensure all University-managed technologies are secure, but everyone in the OHIO community has a role to play in cybersecurity.

  • Keep all software on internet connected devices updates to improve preformance and security
Use personal devices carefully. OIT does not manage personally owned devices, so you have some additional responsibilities to carry out, such as:
    • Keep location services off whenever possible.
    • Avoid clicking on links in emails unless absolutely necessary. Tricking users into clicking legitimate-looking links is a common phishing scam.
    • Run anti-virus software regularly on your computer.
  • Update your devices regularly. If you have a device that you occasionally use, but it is generally turned off or not connected to the internet, it does not have the ability to install the latest security patches.
  • Be cautious when storing sensitive data. Especially if your device is mobile, like a laptop, you want to reduce the amount of sensitive data that is stored on it and encrypt the device. Many of OIT's service offerings are accessible in a web browser (e.g. OneDrive), meaning that you don't have to store data on your device in order to access or work with it.
