Email impersonation or spoofing is a forgery of a message so it appears to have originated from a legitimate sender. This is a popular tactic by attackers as the recipient is more likely to open a message from a familiar source.
The attacker may be attempting to steal your credentials via a malicious link, infect your machine with a malicious attachment, or steal money such as through wire transfers or gift card purchasing scams. If you did not open any attachments, or provide any credentials or money to the attacker, you can mark the message as a phish and delete it from your inbox.
If you feel that you fell victim to an impersonation/spoof email, call the Information Security Safe Line at 740-566-7233 or email security@ohio.edu. An Information Security Analyst will assess the situation and provide guidance on how to move forward.
