Funding Opportunities
Faculty Professional Development Funds Scripps College of Communication
The Scripps College will disburse funds to faculty members and graduate students to support research, creative activities, teaching and curriculum innovation, and professional development. Support will be provided in four categories:
- Individual awards: up to $750
- International travel: up to $750
- Collaboration awards: up to $1,000
- Interdisciplinary faculty working groups: up to $1,000 total
This funding is intended as a supplement to other available funds (where available) and to support activities that connect the interests and areas of expertise of faculty across our five schools. We are especially interested in ideas and projects that enhance and broaden our research and creative activities as well as update our curriculum.
The purpose of each award and its specific application procedures are described under each heading. Deadlines and important general procedures for all of the awards follow under the last heading.
Individual Awards
The purpose is to assist faculty members and graduate students with the expenses of research, creative activity, teaching and curricular development, or professional development, including any of the normally reimbursable professional expenses (travel, equipment, supplies, etc.). The maximum award is $750 per project or activity. These awards are limited to one person per year.
Requests for funding must include:
- a description of the purpose of the project or activity (250 words). Professional development requests should explain how the project will provide long-term benefit to the individual and college.
- an estimated budget for the project specifying how the proposed funds will be used (1 page maximum)
- if you are presenting your work at a conference, a copy of the acceptance letter or similar document.
- a list of any other sources of funding
- a letter or email from the school director stating whether the school will match funds
- research compliance approval (human subjects or animals, if applicable) or estimated timeline for IRB approval process.

International Travel Awards
The purpose is to support international travel related to research and creative activity for faculty members and graduate students. Priority is given to awards supporting the presentation of completed and competitively selected peer-reviewed papers or juried creative works. Awards may also be made as a secondary source of support for faculty or graduate students needing support for international travel for research or creative activity, if funds are available. Awards are limited to $750 per person per year.
Requests for funding must include:
- a short statement describing the purpose of the trip (1‐4 sentences) and an abstract of the work (150 words)
- a copy of letter of acceptance letter or similar document (email from programming chair is acceptable); if not available, indicate when notice is expected.
- an estimated budget specifying how the proposed funds will be used
- a list of other sources of funding
- a letter or email from the school director stating whether the school will match funds.

Collaboration Awards
The purpose is to support collaboration among multiple faculty members across schools in Scripps College in research, creative activity, and curricular development or teaching. Preference will be given to teams from different schools combining unique areas of expertise. Funds may be used for any professional expenses incurred in the process of collaborative work.
Awards are limited to $1,000 per project or activity.
Requests for funding must include:
- a statement describing the purpose of the project or activity (1-2 pages)
- an estimated budget for the project specifying how the proposed funds will be used (1 page maximum)
- a list of other sources of funding
- a letter or email of support from each faculty member’s school director indicating whether the school will match funds.
- Research Compliance approval (human subjects or animals, if applicable) or estimated timeline for IRB approval process.

Interdisciplinary Faculty Working Groups
To encourage interdisciplinary scholarship, creative activity, and leadership in teaching or curricular development in emerging areas, the Scripps College provides funding of up to $1,000 total for working groups of faculty drawn from multiple schools. The intention is to support innovative work based in cross-school interdisciplinary collaborations and new combinations of expertise. Examples may include production teamwork, research projects, clusters or networks of scholars and artists pursuing shared interests through colloquia, workshops, visiting lectures, and more. Funds may be used for related expenses to support group activities; note that any supplies (including equipment or media) purchased with these funds remain the property of the university.
Each funded group is expected to (1) issue an invitation for membership across the college, or beyond; (2) host at least one college-wide or public event related to the project; (3) provide an annual report on all activities, including a list of any work or products emanating from the group (applications, submissions, grants, publications, productions, etc.). Application for renewed funding may be submitted with the annual report.
Proposals for faculty working group status and funding must include:
- the name of the group and a description of the group’s purpose and proposed activities (1-2 pages)
- a rationale describing its interdisciplinary nature, identifying its unique or innovative characteristics, and demonstrating its value to multiple schools or the college as a whole (1 page)
- a list of any other sources of funds
- a list of faculty members and students who have expressed interest or agreed to participate.
Funding proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis and proposals will be considered throughout the year until the pool is exhausted. It is recommended that faculty considering a spring semester 2024 event contact the Associate Dean before December 15. Faculty planning a summer 2024 event should ideally contact the Associate Dean before March 1.

DEADLINES
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis up to November 3 for fall semester, March 1 for spring semester, and May 3 for summer funding (if still available). Please consult with the Associate Dean regarding summer funds. Since funds for this account do not carry forward, any approved awards need to be spent in the FY awarded. Please keep in mind that goods and services must be received/occur by June 30 to be recorded as current FY expenses.
The associate dean prefers that materials be submitted by these dates but reserves the right to consider requests outside of these timeframes if necessary.
General Procedures and Conditions
- All proposals should be sent in a single email attachment to the Associate Dean of the Scripps College of Communication.
- Please double space with normal margins and font sizes; 12-point Times New Roman, keeping proposals within the page limits listed above.
- These funds are intended to supplement other available funds. Faculty members with access to start up funds, endowments, grants, school funds, and so on, should expend those funds first. School travel/development allotments may be used as matching funds.
- Funding during a given fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) will be granted only once to a faculty member or graduate student within any one category.
- A faculty member may receive support from up to two funds in any given year.
- Graduate students receiving funding must be enrolled full time.
- All expenses should be submitted via My Bobcat Business to ensure approval and compliance with policy. Spending should not take place prior to this step. The OHIO Service Center can process all expenditures on your behalf or direct as to how to go about the purchase once approved and policy is checked. No alcohol may be purchased with any of these funds.
- We ask that any products resulting from activities supported by these funds include an acknowledgement of support by the Scripps College of Communication.
- All expenditures of these funds and associated activities must comply with Ohio University and Scripps College policies and procedures.
- Note that equipment, books and other materials purchased with university funds remain the property of the university.
- Listed amounts are for the current fiscal year only; fund size may vary according to funding availability in future years.
