Photography
On top of supporting scholastic and scientific endeavors the green roof is also used by students with artistic or creative skills. The green roof and the projects inspired by it have been the subject for many student photographers, allowing them to build experience in their career fields while also expressing their creativity and telling a story about the work students and faculty are doing. Many of the photos throughout our website were taken by OHIO photojournalism students and in this section, we recognize those artists and share the work accomplished by these exceptional students.
As always, new participation in the green roof project is welcome. If you are interested in highlighting the green roof project in a photo essay or article, please let us know and we will showcase your published work or class project on this page.
The students who took these photographs are described at the time the pieces were published; some of them may have already made the transition to alumni by the time you read this. Personal websites and linked-in profiles are accessible by clicking on the photographers’ names under their photos
Laura Bilson
Laura Bilson is an undergraduate student from the Scripps College of Communication studying photojournalism. She currently works as part of the PACE program with Ohio University for University Communications and Marketing. This particular photo captures Mikayla Schuyler, a music production student at Ohio University, as she helps Dr. Kim Thompson attach a mounting post that will hold a bat house. She and other student volunteers constructed several bat houses as shelters for endangered bats. One of the bat houses is stationed on the Schoonover green roof.
Steel Brooks
Steel Brooks is a graduate student in the Scripps College of Communication, pursuing a master’s degree in photojournalism. He is currently a graduate assistant with the Sustainable Living Hub. In addition to photographing students involved in green roof projects, he is helping create an informational display for the green roof. The first photo captures Fiona Davis a student volunteer assembling one of the bat houses that will provide shelter for bats on and off the green roof. The second picture shows three Ohio University students taking soil samples for the microbiome project on the Schoonover green roof.

Jack Hall
Jack Hall is an undergraduate student studying photojournalism at the Scripps College of Communication. He was one of the first photojournalism students to work with the green roof project. He took photos of the Schoonover rooftop before it was planted and photos of our outreach efforts. The first photo here was taken for a promotional news piece about the Schoonover green roof. The second photo features mini roof models and thermometers that were used at a STEM event for children to demonstrate how a green roof compares to a shingled roof for insulating buildings against heat radiation in the summer and heat loss in the winter.

Jesse Jarrold-Grapes
Jesse Jarrold-Grapes in an undergraduate photojournalism major in Scripps College. He attended a STEM fair for young people at the Russ College of Engineering on campus where University students involved with the green roof project used a roofing model to demonstrate the benefits of a green roof over a traditional roof. In these photos, elementary school students measure the water running off the traditional roof side of the model so that they can compare it to the water runoff on the green roof side. See our Engineering page for more information about the large models that were designed by students and donated to local schools.

Madison Salyer
Madison Salyer is a commercial photography major in Scripps College. Madison has been taking pictures of the green roof since its installation. In fact, she was one of the first students to see the green roof blooming and has taken many beautiful photos of the plants and insects living on the roof as well as the monitoring equipment used in the scientific research currently underway on the green roof. Many of her photos are featured in this website.
