Sam Jurgena was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa. He attended Iowa State University where he received a B.A. in Political Science. Following graduation, Sam worked for the Iowa State Legislature for State Representative Mary Wolfe. In 2017, Sam earned his J.D. from City University of New York School of Law. While in law school, he worked as a mediator throughout New York City Small Claims Courts and the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. Sam continued his legal career in Tucson, Arizona, where he worked for the Pima County Public Defenders - Family Defense Team, specializing in the representation of children in delinquency and dependency matters. Before joining Voinovich School, Sam was a Hamilton County Public Defender for the Youth Defense Unit. Sam hopes to continue the great work of Voinovich School in service of the public in Appalachia.
