Theater: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the BA and the BFA degree?

We want all Theater majors to be well-rounded students and require students to take classes outside of the School of Theater. The B.A. consists of 60% University coursework and 40% Theater coursework; the B.F.A. consists of 60% Theater coursework and 40% University coursework. The B.A. is popular for students who want to double-major.

Can I minor in Theater?

Any student may minor in Theater; no audition is required.

Are transfer students admitted to the School of Theater?

Yes, the School of Theater accepts transfer students from other schools and from other majors. Please contact the Theater Office or call 740.593.4818

How can I find out what's happening in the School of Theater?

The best way to find out what's happening in the School of Theater is to attend Lunchbag. Lunchbag is a gathering of the entire school on Fridays from 12-12:45pm in the E.E. Baker Theater in Kantner Hall. We have program announcements, host guest speakers, and share University event information. Current School of Theater news is available, and you can also subscribe to the College of Fine Arts weekly newsletter by emailing your interest to finearts@ohio.edu.

If I'm not a Theater major or minor, can I still participate in the School of Theater shows?

Yes! The school typically produces five main stage shows during the academic year, in addition to other curricular productions with differing levels of support and student lab shows, totaling roughly a dozen productions per year. Any University student can audition for the productions or apply to work backstage. Working backstage on the productions may count for class credit. You can also attend and/or participate in Midnight Madness, which happens most Friday nights at 11pm in the Hahne Theater located in Kantner Hall.

What does it cost to see a School of Theater production?

Thanks to Arts for Ohio, all Ohio University students can attend School of Theater productions (and most of the events in the College of Fine Arts) for FREE. You can pick up your free ticket at the Memorial Auditorium Box Office. Tickets are also available at the performance venue one hour prior to the performance.

Non-student ticket prices: Adults $10.00; non-OHIO students and senior citizens: $7.00.

Call 740-593-4818 for ADA accessibility information. Main stage productions are suitable for general audiences, although probably not for children under 13. Tickets can be purchases as a subscription or individually by calling the Memorial Auditorium Box Office at 740-593-1780.

Can I meet with a faculty member?

You are welcome to schedule a time to meet with a faculty member. Please contact the School of Theater office or call 740.593.4818.

May I observe a class?

You are welcome to observe a class with prior notice. If you're able to attend Experience the Arts Day in the fall or Scholarship Day in January, you'll have the opportunity to meet faculty and take workshops. If these dates are not convenient for you, another time can be scheduled by contacting the School of Theater office or call 740.593.4818.
