Ohio University Southern emergency weather shelter locations

In the case of an emergency situation on campus or for weather related closures, information will be provided via the Emergency Messaging System. The emergency messaging system dispenses information via multiple media platforms (text message, email, and direct phone call).

The information system uses your contact information from your My OHIO account. Keep your My OHIO information updated to receive emergency notifications.

To ensure that you receive the most current emergency updates, take a moment to update your personal information.

Additionally, if the emergency is a critical incident, or becomes a critical incident, you will find information through some or all of the following, depending on the incident and the conditions at the time:

  • OHIO Alert! Emergency Mass Notification System
  • Ohio University Southern homepage
  • Your Ohio University e-mail
  • Non-tech methods (on-the-ground teams, bullhorns, posted alerts, etc.)

Additional information may also be provided on Ohio University Southern's Facebook page and Twitter account.

*Disclaimer: Ohio University will attempt to provide timely, important messages that are as accurate as possible under the circumstances. In an emergency, however, all forms of communication can become unreliable.

CLASS CANCELLATION / CLOSURES

When weather conditions are such or are anticipated to be such as to merit consideration for altering the normal operations of the campus, the following guidelines will be used:

The Dean only has the final authority to make the decision to cancel classes or close all OUS sites; Ironton and Ohio Horse Park.

Decisions will be based on the most current weather information available at the time
gathered from a variety of sources including the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lawrence
County Sheriff’s Department, National Weather Service forecasts, and OUS Facilities
Management Department.

Courses held at off-campus locations outside of University control will be subject to the
policies and procedures of the governing authority (e.g., workshops / classes held at a public
school building).

When inclement weather threatens and forces delays, cancellations, and / or closures, notification will be made to area radio and television stations. The correctness of their broadcasts cannot be guaranteed and should be double-checked against the OHIO homepage or campus phone message system when possible.
