Overview of the Gilman International Scholarship
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a nationally-competitive award sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. This scholarship aims to broaden the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints and is open to Pell-eligible undergraduate students.
In addition to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, the U.S. Department of State also offers:
- Gilman-McCain Scholarship: This scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child or spousal dependents of active or activated US military personnel during the time of application.
- Critical Need Language Award: This is a supplemental award available to students studying a critical need language.
- STEM Supplemental Award: This is a supplemental awards of up to $1,000 each for a Gilman scholar to conduct STEM-related research abroad as part of their study abroad or international internship program.

OGO will be hosting an informational session on TEAMs: February 6, 2024 from 4-5PM.
Undergraduate students who receive the Pell Grant will receive an email on February 1st which will include information to access the session.
Student Eligibility
- Must be an undergraduate, degree-seeking OHIO student applying for participation in a study abroad program for academic credit.
- Must receive the federal Pell Grant at the time of application or provide proof that you will receive the grant at the time of participation.
- Must be a citizen or national of the United States
Program Eligibility
Intended program must meet all eligibility criteria for the Gilman International Scholarship:
- must be a credit-bearing study abroad or internship experience;
- must take place in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State's Travel Advisory System.
- may take place in multiple destinations.
Award Amounts
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: Award amounts can vary, up to $5,000.
- Applicants who will be studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000 for a combined total of $8,000.
- Applicants who will be conducting STEM-related research abroad as part of their study abroad or international internship program can apply for the STEM Supplemental Award of up to $1,000.
Gilman-McCain Scholarship: Awards of $5,000 for child or spousal dependents of active or activated US military personnel during the time of application.

October Deadline: Gilman International Scholarship Application deadline for programs beginning between December 1, 2024, to October 31, 2025. This cycle encompasses Winter Break 2024-2025, Spring Break 2025, Spring 2025, Summer 2025, Fall 2025, and Academic Year 2024-2025 programs:

March Deadline: Gilman International Scholarship Application deadline for programs beginning between May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026. This cycle encompasses Summer 2025, Fall 2025, and Academic Year 2025-2026, and Spring 2026 programs:

Gilman Incentive Grant for OHIO Students
The Gilman Incentive Grant provides additionally financial support to Gilman-eligible students who have submitted a complete Gilman Scholarship application by the deadline. This award is intended to defray the cost of travel associated with participation on a Gilman-eligible program; awardees will receive up to $1,000. The Gilman Incentive Grant will be directly applied to students' OHIO accounts during the term in which the awardee is scheduled to travel.
Applicants do not need to receive the Gilman scholarship in order to receive the Gilman Incentive Grant. They must, however, participate on the study abroad experience outlined in their Gilman application. Additionally, students may only receive one Gilman Incentive Grant during their undergraduate career at Ohio University.
Note: Students applying for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship are also eligible to receive the same essay support and financial aid advising, as well as the Gilman Incentive Grant. This scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child or spousal dependents of active or activated US military personnel during the time of application.
Student Eligibility
Applicants will only receive the award if they meet ALL eligibility requirements for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship AND submit a complete Gilman Scholarship application. In addition, applicants must meet the following:
Gilman October 10, 2024 Deadline:
- Participate in application essay review with Catherine Marshall, Cherita King Oliver , or Chris Lewis: no later than Monday, October 6 at 5:00 pm.
- Meet with Financial Aid certifier, Amy Joy: no later than Monday, October 6 at 5:00 pm.
- Email amyjoy@ohio.edu to schedule an appointment or visit during study abroad walk-in hours.
- Have their applications certified as accurate and complete during the advisor certification period.
Gilman March 6, 2025 Deadline:
- Participate in application essay review with Catherine Marshall, Cherita King Oliver , or Chris Lewis: no later than Monday, March 3 at 5:00 pm.
