OHIO University Libraries is partnering with the Athena Cinema to promote the free to all Science on Screen®  virtual screening of PICTURE A SCIENTIST, directed by Ian Cheney and Sharon Shattuck, running from June 12-June 17, 2020.  In our work as research librarians we work with scholars and scholarship; and we are keenly aware of the disparities within women and science.  In this time of social justice reform, as we celebrate 100 years of votes for women, we still have a long way to go.  #educatewithmedia

PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. Ian Cheney's films include King Corn, The City Dark, Truck Farm, The Search for General Tso, Bluespace, The Most Unknown and Picture Character. Sharon Shattuck’s recent work includes From This Day Forward, the NYT Op-Docs science-puppet series Animated Life, and the podcast Conviction: American Panic from Gimlet Media.

Then, join in for a very special online Q&A with directors Ian Cheney and Sharon Shattuck on Wednesday, June 17th at 8:00PM on YouTube. Radiolab’s Molly Webster will moderate the discussion.

We offer you resources to continue your education on this topic: databases in Health & Medicine  or Women and Gender Studies and many more.  We have Subject & Course Guides on many subjects in order to help you navigate through our resources.  If you are a community member, The Athens County Public Library system has many resources; and they are now open to the public.

Though we are working remotely, Ohio University Libraries is up and running, with access to databases, ebooks, streaming films, digital collections, research help and online chat if you have questions.

Other partners include the OHIO Museum Complex and OU Women’s Center and Arts for Ohio for providing funding for the screening of this film. Science on Screen® is an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre, with major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
