University Libraries acquires Sage Skills Business and Sage Skills Student Success
Ohio University Libraries will be providing access to two new resources, Sage Skills: Business and Sage Skills: Student Success, to the OHIO community, thanks to OhioLINK’s purchase with awarded funds. The purchase will help foster skills for students' success in both their academic careers and beyond and is now available for trial access. All content in Sage Skills, including all new content published, will begin in January 2025.
Sage is a major academic publisher as well as a key partner of many libraries. The program provides access to academic materials such as books, journals and videos on top of digital research resources. University Libraries has purchased and subscribed to a variety of Sage products over the years and now will be incorporating Sage Skills, which is an interactive resource to help users learn and develop valuable academic skills to foster success.
A benefit of Sage Skills is its utilization of multimedia, including videos, example scenarios, quizzes and worksheets. The learning tools pair with written materials that can be self-paced and self-navigated. Sage Skills has two main modules of Business Skills, focusing on professional skills for the workplace, and Student Success, aiming at personal research and study skills for students—especially those new to the university experience.
Seth Sisler, head of Acquisitions & Collections Services, wrote that Sage Skills will give the OHIO community a set of versatile tools for essential expertise like communication, critical thinking and managing well-being.
“The purchase is a way to support students in developing fundamental skills and support faculty in tying those skills to their classes,” Sisler wrote. “OhioLINK’s membership is very diverse, including academic libraries of every size and type across the state. Sage Skills is a resource that meets an essential need at all those locations, supporting students and those who work closely with them.”
Sage Skills also goes well with the previously purchased Sage Research Methods, which the Libraries purchased access to last summer. Faculty and staff can take advantage of Sage Skills with embedded content that can go right to Canvas.
Hanna Schmillen, head of Research Services and subject librarian for health sciences, also wrote in an email that Sage Skills will allow students, faculty and staff ready-to-go asynchronous content that can be accessed, embedded and used anytime.
“Often times, librarians get requests for videos or interactive modules for information literacy and library skill-related topics,” Schmillen wrote. “Sage Skills will help us [with] delivering content quicker for those foundational skills.”
The Libraries is excited to offer Sage Skills to the OHIO community and add it to the abundance of resources available with University Libraries.
