Advancing Scholarship in Research and Education (ASPIRE) Grants
2023/2024
College of Health Sciences and Professions (CHSP) Grants to Advance Scholarship in Research and Education (ASPIRE) is an internal grant mechanism to support small projects that can be carried out in a short period of time.
The two pathways are Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and Clinical/Translational/Population Health Research.
Purposes of pathways:
- To motivate innovative research;
- To improve the quality of teaching;
- To provide funding that will leverage external opportunity and potential;
- To motivate published work in peer-reviewed journals.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning |

Purpose |
To foster innovative and rigorous exploration of pedagogical approaches, techniques, or environments relevant to preparing students to work in healthcare professions. Focus on documentation and analysis of student outcomes. |
Priority Areas | Interdisciplinary/Interprofessional, rural health/healthcare delivery, community engagement, population health. |
PI Eligibility | Full-time CHSP faculty members with research expectations in workload (who have not received funding through this pathway for 2 years). |
Funding Level 2023-2024 | Up to two (2) grants up to $8,000 each for meritorious proposals. |
Award Period | June 1, 2024- May 31, 2025. No extensions. All expenses must be posted by May 31 |
Deliverables |
A peer-reviewed publication AND A workshop or seminar presented to CHSP following the year of the award |
Review Process | All applications will be reviewed by the CHSP Teaching and Learning Committee. |
Clinical/Translational/Population Health Research |

Purpose | To support innovative and rigorous research with good potential for external funding and / or entrepreneurship in health sciences and professions (e.g., aging, chronic disease, wellness, human performance, substance abuse, rural health, infectious disease, health care delivery, mental health, disabilities. |
Priority Areas | Interdisciplinary/Interprofessional, rural health/healthcare delivery, community engagement, population health. |
PI Eligibility | Full-time CHSP faculty members with research expectations in workload (who have not received funding through this pathway for 2 years). |
Funding Level 2023-2024 | Up to two (2) grants up to $12,000 each for meritorious proposals. |
Award Period | June 1, 2024- May 31, 2025. No extensions. All expenses must be posted by May 31 |
Deliverables |
A peer-reviewed publication AND/OR Submission of an extramural grant for an amount greater than this award |
Review Process | All applications will be reviewed by the CSHP Interdisciplinary Research Committee. |
Requirements: Recipients must submit a written final report by November 30 following the grant termination date. The final report is a summary of the project’s accomplishments

Due Date: March 1, 2024
Other Information:
- All applications will be reviewed and ranked using a standard rubric.
- Applications not funded will receive written feedback and guidance on ways to improve the applications.
- The review committees will make their recommendations to the CHSP Dean and may make recommendations on budget revisions.
- Reapplication of internal grants:
- May not reapply if awarded in the previous year
- Deliverable (from previous funding) must be completed to reapply for funding
- Deliverables are expected. Support will be provided by the dean’s office, if needed, in writing for publication and writing for external grants.
- Release time: While all faculty with research expectations have dedicated time in their workload for research, an exception will be made only for this funding award period. Funding for faculty buyouts is limited to 10% of the total workload for the PI or another designated faculty member. Requires prior approval from Department Chair/School Director.
Not fundable:
- Summer salary
- Graduate assistantships and waivers (hourly wages allowed)
- Overload
