Equipment Requirements

Medical Equipment

Required: In order to participate in clinical skills activities and clinical and community experiences, the following equipment is required. Without this equipment, you will be asked to leave the educational experience.

  1. Good stethoscope with diaphragm and bell capabilities-- Heritage College Students will be supplied a stethoscope courtesy of the Heritage College Society of Alumni and Friends, as well as other friends of the college.
  2. Short (hip length) White "Clinical Jacket" for labs and Clinical, and Community Experiences (CCE). You will receive a clinical jacket courtesy of the Ohio Osteopathic Association at the White Coat Ceremony at Convocation. Additional coats are available from various vendors, and may be purchased at your discretion if you purchase additional coats on your own, please visit the admissions office to get patches and information about embroidery. – cost: $18*
  3. Diagnostic set (otoscope and ophthalmoscope) -- cost $400-700*;
  4. Sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) -- cost: $40 to $185*;
  5. Percussion hammer -- cost: $2*; although "neurologic" models may include a brush and a pin in the handle, a basic "rubber mallet" is sufficient;
  6. Tuning fork for hearing test (512 Hz) -- cost $7*
  7. EKG Calipers -- cost $7*

Optional:

  1. A traditional "little black bag" (color is optional) to serve as a container for the equipment -- cost $45 to $150*

Laboratory Equipment (Gross Anatomy)

You will need the following equipment prior to your first day of classes.

  1. Metal scalpel handle (#4) and blades (#20, 21, 22, or 23);
  2. Blunt probe with angular tip;
  3. Dissecting scissors, straight, blunt, and/or sharp points, 5 ½ inches in length;
  4. Plain thumb forceps, broad point, 4 ½ inches in length
  5. Hemostat/lock forceps;
    • The above equipment will be sold in a kit during orientation. You should also purchase extra blades.
  6. Long white lab coat or scrubs (many students keep an OLD pair of shoes to wear in lab);
  7. Nitrile or latex exam gloves (available in boxes of 100).
  8. Protective Eye wear (may be any style that you'd like, but they must adequately cover the eyes, including wrapping around on the sides)

Note: Students with hair that hangs below their ears will need to use rubber bands, headbands, barrettes, etc. to keep their hair under control and out of the way. Students are not to wear sandals or open toed shoes in the lab.

About Purchasing Equipment

You may already own medical equipment, or have the knowledge, confidence, and opportunity to make independent purchases of these items before you arrive. However, in the event that you do not, Heritage College student organizations sponsor equipment sales during orientation week. Heritage College does not endorse any student group or equipment manufacturer, such events are permitted as educational opportunities.
