Our Mission

The mission of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) is to inspire, encourage, and enable women surgeons to achieve their personal and professional goals. The AWS chapter at OUHCOM Athens not only advocates but also facilitates the success of aspiring women surgeons by:

  • Promoting professional growth and development
  • Providing and enhancing networking and mentorship opportunities within surgical community
  • Encouraging participation by all surgeons, trainees, and medical students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation
  • Fostering an environment supportive of personal values and individual diversity in order to adequately serve all communities and achieve health equity
  • Advancing the highest standards of competence and ethical behavior

Services Provided

AWS is dedicated to offering numerous benefits to the community, students, and the osteopathic profession. By implementing these initiatives, AWS can significantly contribute to enhancing overall quality of healthcare and professional development. Some of its contributions are:

  • Health Education and Awareness: promote preventative care, healthy lifestyles, and understanding of common medical conditions
  • Community Partnership: collaborate with local community agencies, clinics and other OUHCOM organizations to improve access to medical services for underserved population
  • Educational Seminars: offer seminars and lectures on medical topics, surgical technique, and advanced medical technology
  • Mentorship and Networking: establish events to connect medical students with professionals in their field of interest
  • Career Guidance: provide guidance on clinical rotations, residency applications, and career planning
  • Student Collaboration: foster collaboration between third- and fourth-year students and first- and second-year students
  • Policy Advocacy: advocate for policies that support osteopathic surgeons at local, state, and national levels
