Research and Scholarly Activity Registration and Elective Research Rotations

Medical Student Research and Scholarly Activity Registration

Heritage College Policy 2.22 requires that all medical students conduct research and scholarly activities under the direction of a mentor and follow all Ohio University and Heritage College policies and procedures, including registering their research and scholarly activities with the Office of Research and Grants through Salesforce. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all requirements are met prior to engaging in research or scholarly activity.

Please note that research and scholarly activities and dissemination activities not registered in Salesforce will not be considered a designation of Research Distinction on the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).  Details about activities that will be considered for a designation of Research Distinction on the MSPE can be found here.

Students will also use the Salesforce Student Portal to apply for elective research rotations.

Instructions to Use Salesforce to Register Research and Scholarly Activities, Upload CITI Training, and Enter Dissemination Records

  • Students must register all research and scholarly activity by creating a Research and Scholarly Activity record in the Student Portal for each project prior to the start date of engagement in the project.
  • The project registration should focus on the student's role on the project, not the dissemination activities.  Dissemination activities (e.g., publications, presentations, awards) should be entered as separate Dissemination Records.
  • CITI training completion records should be uploaded to the Student Documents in the Student Portal.

Elective Research Rotation Information

Elective Research Rotations

Heritage College students can complete elective research rotations during their medical school training.  Typically, students will register for elective research rotations during their fourth year, but students who have an existing project and a commitment from their mentor may be granted permission to participate in elective research rotations during spring semester of their third year. Elective research rotations include a Critical Literature Review (OCOM 8942); Case-Based Study (OCOM 8943); or Original Research (OCOM 8944). Third-year (OMS III) elective research rotations are restricted to OCOM 8944 with permission.

Please review the Third-Year Elective Research Rotation guide before applying for a third year elective research rotation.
